The Groupe Savoie industrial complex comprises several units that complement each other within a larger structure where our global activities are vertically integrated. This structure along with our desire to maximize our resources are the decisive factors behind Groupe Savoie’s success. The main wood species processed are hard maple, yellow and white birch, red maple and aspen. A brief description of how the main production plants work and how they relate to each other demonstrates the advantages of this approach.

Groupe Savoie obtains the 430,000 m³ of wood it requires each year to supply its production plants from two sources: Annual allocation from the crown land of the Province of New Brunswick and direct purchase from private wood lot owners and industrial leasehold. As for the wood from the crown land, Groupe Savoie is responsible for harvesting in accordance with environmental regulations and the principles of sustainable development. Our ISO 14001 and SFI certifications provide assurance of resource renewal for future generations, and clearly attest to our commitment towards the environment. Our own 300,000+ m3 annual forestry operation provides us with a steady flow of quality raw material. We are particularly proud of our 130 forestry workers trained and sensitized regarding our environmental and sustainable forestry objectives.

Restigouche

Selected high-grade logs are sent from the yard to the sawmill. Using electronic optimization technology, the mill produces lumber and cants that are later graded according to industry standards. Most of the plant’s production (85%) goes as primary supply to our component plants. The rest is exported. Total production capacity is 30 million FBM (70,000 m³) per year.

• Savoie

Lower grade logs are first sent to this sawmill for slashing. After a process of electronic optimization, the plant produces pallet lumber of a maximum length of 48 inches that is later graded according to industry standards. Most of the plant’s production is sent towards the pallet assembly plant. However, the higher-grade output is redirected towards the component plant where it is transformed into hard wood flooring. Total annual production capacity is 35 million FBM (83,000 m³).

• Westville

The Westville sawmill is fed primarily with wood from privately-owned lots. The plant produces lumber and cants that are later graded according to industry standards. Most of its production is sent either towards the component plant or the pallet plant in St-Quentin. The rest is sold in foreign markets. Total annual production capacity is 30 million FBM (71,000 m³).

• St-Quentin

Fed primarily by the Restigouche and Savoie sawmills in addition to outside purchases, this plant produces pallets that conform to a great variety of technical and quality specifications from many different customers. Our production line can also include heat treatment (ISPM15). This plant absorbs most of the pallet wood produced by the Savoie sawmill. The rest is either sold to the market or sent to the recycling plant in Moncton for maximum integration. The plant’s production capacity is 2 million pallets per year.

• Moncton

Faithful to its goal of maximizing resource use, Groupe Savoie operates a recycling and pallet manufacturing facility in Moncton. The plant obtains its pallet wood from the St-Quentin pallet plant, which it uses to manufacture new pallets and repair second-hand ones. The plant production capacity is 300,000 pallets per year.

• Saint-Quentin

Once the wood has been subjected to a highly precise and controlled drying process, the St-Quentin plant is fed by the Restigouche, Westville and Savoie mills and, if necessary, by direct purchase from industry partners. This state-of-the-art second-transformation plant produces a variety of components and glued panels made to client’s specifications.

The technologies used allow us to meet most complex technical requirements and standards of quality.

The plant consumes more than 10 million FBM (24,000 m³) per year.

• Kedgwick

This third-transformation plant applies numerically controlled machinery and other cutting-edge technologies to produce cabinet and furniture components, and hardwood flooring.

The plant is mainly fed by the component plant in St-Quentin, the Restigouche sawmill, the pallet plant and by direct outside purchases.

The Kedgwick plant operates its own kilns powered by a boiler that uses wood by-products as fuel.

The plant uses more than 10 million FBM (24,000 m³) per year.(24 000 m³)

•Wood Pellet Plant

Equipped with cutting-edge technology, our wood pellet plant is supplied with the by-products of our own sawmill operations, including sawdust and the biomass resulting from our forestry operations. Our pellet plant has the capacity and operational flexibility to produce various quality grades –from Premium to Industrial– to meet our customer needs.

Our hardwood pellets are manufactured under the trademark CANAWICK™ and are available in 40 lb pre-packed bags or 1 ton bulk bags.

Our current annual production amounts to 55,000 tons; however, our production capacity could increase to over 75,000 tons to meet continued demand growth.

Groupe Savoie Inc. is proud to take this step forward in advancing increasingly sustainable practices and providing a renewable green energy source for residential, commercial and industrial users.

One feature of Groupe Savoie that is much appreciated by its customers is its internal capacity to cater to its own needs on a wide range of support services for maintenance and industrial/technical development.

This gives us great flexibility to react promptly and adequately to changing customer demands, to keep our equipment in top running condition, to ensure consistent product quality, to maximize the use of emerging technologies and to support our continuous improvement efforts.
